Do You Guys Have Any Fun Ideas For Bird Toys That I Can Make Myself?

Filed in Category Bird Toys

I have tryed to make little string toys and thats just hard and they just sit there and do nothing with them. The best suggestion i have gotten for a toy was a hamster ball. If you can i would like homemade toys that i can make but you could also include good store bought toys as well.THANKS

That really depends on what kind of birds you have and what kind of toys you know they’re already interested in. If you have birds that like to shred, get shreddable Chinese finger traps (bamboo shredders) that can be bought in bulk, shredders that are bought in 10 feet at any generic Petsmart, fold treats inside of paper pockets, get chewy, squishy shapes from craft stores, or even straws. If you have birds who enjoy the sound they get when they hit bells, simply put, get some bells! Make sure they’re not copper and at best, you could get stainless steel. For this, while you may be able to find some at craft store, pet stores (on and offline, ie. http://www.windycityparrot.com , http://www.greyfeathertoys.com , http://www.parrotdiseperch.com etc.) are your best bet at getting bird safe ones. Craft stores are honestly your best friend. Avoid using string, as the fibres can easily unwind and tangle, snagging the birds’ beaks or toes. If the fibres are loose, it should only be acceptable in an unoiled type of rope that is straw-like, so if anything does unwind, it falls right off in the small portion it fell off in.
I use natural unoiled hemp (sisal is good too) and string it through colourful beads, straws, squishy shapes, doll heads, candle covers (craft stores again, great for hiding treats in), bamboo shredders, and I add some distracting colourful paper. Shredded paper, tissue paper, etc. You can also buy apple chews, blocks of wood, plastic pacifiers, teddy bears, duckies, etc. at craft stores or online in bulk that work great.
In terms of store bought toys, I would say the Mardi Gras line of toys that can be found at Petsmart are my and my birds’ favourites because I have shredders.
Here’s a toy I made today in about 15 to 20 minutes (I had to use hot glue, so I had to wait for it to warm up): http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g10/mc…

birds really just play with things with their beaks so it needsa to be tuff like wood or hard plastic, really tho… things are cheap enough to buy~!!!!!… otherwise, bits of twigs, cuttlefish from the beach is also good.
