The answer with the links will help, but lets make a few quick calculations to help you determine the scale. Standard RAIL gauge is 4′ 8.5″, so here is a list of the basic scales and the distance between the rails:
    G scale – 45 millimeters between rails
    O scale – 32 mm
    HO scale – 16.5 mm
    N scale – 9 mm
    Z scale – 6.5 mm
The Value of your trains is VERY much up in the air… it really depends on their age, running condition, and rarity.

Take them to a model shop and get an expert to tell you.
Or… check the gauge. if it’s 16.5mm you are looking at 00 gauge if it’s British, or HO if it’s a European make.
    32mm is 0 gauge.
    45mm is 1 gauge or G gauge.
    If it’s smaller than 16.5mm it could be TT gauge = 12mm or N gauge = 9mm, or Z gauge = 6.5mm.

    mariner31 is right.
Just wanted to add – O scale track has 3 rails, all the others have 2 rails…
If you’re unsure, just take a piece of the track to your local hobby shop (preferably one that sells trains) and they should be able to tell you just by looking at it.
